Year one of SOEL consisted of 40 teachers engaging in a rigorous study of literacy instruction through professional texts and with literacy experts Dr. Nell Duke, Dr. Tanya Wright, and Dr. Gina Cervetti. From the research we reviewed, we began to list the key elements of early literacy instruction.

At 120 SOEL members and counting, and after state-wide collaboration and continued work with researchers to share our learning practices in SOEL,
we now create lesson plans and provide professional learning around the
Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy.
